Summertime is here again, and for crews that work outdoors, that can mean added on-the-job dangers. From sunburns, to dehydration and even heat stroke, warm weather presents a unique set of hazards. It’s important for your entire team to take measures to go in prepared. Here are a few tips to help keep everyone working and feeling their best.
Ease in to it.
As the summer heat sets in, allow your body to slowly adjust. Take added breaks during your first few days, and slowly work your way up to a regular workday’s capacity.
Even after your body has acclimated to the heat, regular breaks are important. Find a shaded spot to sit and cool down when needed, and encourage team members to do the same.
Water consumption is key to helping avoid dehydration. Pause for a drink every 15 minutes or so, even if you aren’t thirsty.
Wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeved shirts and broad-spectrum sunscreens help safeguard team members against uncomfortable burns and even skin cancer. Don’t forget sunglasses with proper UV protection.
Unforeseen incidents can happen to even the most careful of workers. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) encourages supervisors and team members to know how to spot signs of heat-related illness, and to have a plan in place if it occurs. With everyone working together, we can ensure a safer work environment for all involved, all season long.
