Talk with individuals you know and trust, and get a feel for their experiences. Who have they worked with in the past? Were they happy with the service and craftsmanship? Would they work with them again? While another company's experiences will never completely match yours, they often help paint a general picture of how that contractor operates.
Look into licensing.
Companies that carry out heavy construction or concrete work are required to maintain certification through governmental or industrial organizations - and oftentimes both. Doing so not only ensures they are registered with the proper agencies, but typically means they are taking strides to keep their crew members trained, and their practices both safe and in line with the law. Ask to see proof of the company's licenses. If printed proof isn't available, ask which agencies they are licensed with, and then make some calls.
Take to the internet.
The quickest and easiest way to check out a company is to do an online search. Type in their name and, within seconds, you can pull up everything from customer reviews to membership listings with professional organizations and even news articles. Of course, it pays to search with care. Chances are there are other companies out there with similar names - and there might even be a disgruntled customer who has chosen to voice their frustrations online. Either one of those obstacles could skew your opinion for better or worse.
